Austria e-invoicing: B2G mandate and the B2B outlook
Austria has mandated B2G e-invoicing to federal government since 2014 (ebInterface, Peppol). There is no B2B mandate yet; a ViDA-aligned B2B approach is expected.
| B2G e-invoicing to federal government | mandatory since 2014 |
|---|---|
| B2B e-invoicing | no mandate yet (only B2G is mandatory) |
| Accepted B2G formats | ebInterface (national standard) and Peppol BIS |
| B2G platform | e-Rechnung.gv.at (Bundesrechenzentrum) |
Austria is an EU pioneer for B2G e-invoicing but, as of 2026, has no mandatory B2B mandate yet. This page therefore deliberately sticks to the firmly established position.
B2G mandatory, B2B voluntary
E-invoicing to the federal government has been mandatory since 2014; invoices are submitted through the e-Rechnung.gv.at platform run by the Bundesrechenzentrum. Accepted formats are the national ebInterface standard (maintained by the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber) and Peppol BIS. In the B2B space e-invoicing is currently voluntary.
B2B outlook
Under ViDA every member state must run EN-16931-compliant systems by 2035 and digitally report cross-border B2B supplies. Austria is expected to follow a Peppol-based approach, mirroring Belgium and the Netherlands; a firm timeline was not yet binding at the time of writing. This page will be updated once an official draft is published.
How invowerk helps
You can already validate ebInterface-adjacent or Peppol BIS invoices against EN 16931 today: invowerk validates UBL and CII invoices, explains error codes in plain language (see /codes) and converts between the syntaxes — handy for cross-border exchange with Germany and Italy.
